Does your dog hide under the bed and cry because of the fireworks?

Humans love fireworks–there’s just something about the sound of them bursting mid-air, the glitter in the sky, that seems magical. On the other hand, pets don’t find fireworks as appealing–some are even scared of them.

It’s important to keep your furry friend safe and protected when fireworks are involved.

Here’s How to Keep Your Pet Safe During the Celebrations!

We would like to go through some of our tips on keeping your furry friend safe during the 4th of July.

Here We Go!

While You’re Celebrating the Holiday

  • It’s best to leave your furry friend home when you go out to watch fireworks displays, to parties, parades, etc. Unfamiliar places, loud fireworks, and crowds are a recipe for disaster–especially when your pet gets spooked!
  • If you’re hosting a party, keep your furry friend in an escape-proof room or crate
  • Keep your furry friend inside if you plan on setting off fireworks
  • Make sure that you keep the fireworks as far away from your pooch as possible! Dogs may think that they’re a toy and play with them. Ingesting fireworks is unsafe for dogs!
  • Never leave drinks unattended if your pet is around. Alcohol is unsafe and toxic to pets! It can even be deadly
  • Keep food away from your pooch. Many human foods are toxic to dogs! The list includes tomatoes, caffeine, chewing gum, grapes, etc. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

After Celebrations Are Over

  • Before letting your pet out in the morning or during the day, check your yard for debris–it tends to make its way to your backyard even if you didn’t set fireworks off! Your curious pet could pick it up and try to eat it
  • Make sure that there aren’t any dangerous items lying around the house from the night before, like food skewers, food scraps, alcohol, etc.

The 4th of July may not be as enjoyable for your pet as it is for you. If your furry friend gets extremely anxious and scared due to the fireworks, you should consider asking your vet for a sedative. You could also try CBD oil for relief.
